Are you Surreal?

So Close, But So Far Away

My Surrealism Portrait is very simple. It’s a photo of a sunset, taking from someone’s point of view by standing next to the water and on the sidewalk. In this assignment, we were required to place an egg, clock, streetlight and an egg with a clock on it. It was very hard finding a spot on this photo to place the objects! I had trouble trying to get it to balance and even out without anything taking the focus away from the egg (sun). Being able to change the opacity of the objects was very useful. With that I was able to somewhat an object in the sky and in the windows. In the sky there is an egg with a clock in it to show that time flies. I also tried to make it look like it was being pulled into the sunset because that means that the nights coming and the days over. I titled it, ‘So Close, But So Far Away’ because when I was placing in the streetlights it didn’t look right, but when I was fooling around with the sizes it suddenly looked like they were getting smaller the farther down the sidewalk it was. I then adjusted the lighting to the streetlights so that if you were to be standing there you could only see the shadow or figure of the streetlights. After I was finished and felt as though I’ve completed this assignment the first thing that came up in my mind was how close the sun was, but then again it was so far away. I believe this is by far the most complicated assignments we were given to do because it required a big imagination and patients.

  1. Karina, this is a very well balanced and beautiful image. I like how subtle the clock in the clouds is and you're right the sizing of the lamp posts is well done. The only thing that's an issue is that it is not really very Surrealistic because it is so subtle. In a truly Surreal image the strangeness is a big factor. I like the colour palette and the sun/egg as a focal point. Nicely done.
